on the 2008 Duratec Ranger should the overdrive be constantly on or should it be switched off during what obstacles?

Whenever wheeling i'd keep the overdrive off.

using overdrive at speeds under 45 wont help you either, just extra shifting. cut it off when driving in town or the city.

Towing, hualing, low speed rough terrain, or manual shut off for more power at higher speeds. When all else, its all right to leave it on. The PCM will pretty much decide when to use it. And with enough right foot pressure, it will automatically down shift out of it.

When hualing/towing, my rule of thumb is not to use OD when hauling/towing exceeds cargo capcity of vehicle. So that would be 1,250~1,500 for the Ranger.
