That doesn't sound horrible, there's more you would need to do a swap like the brake/clutch pedal assembly, master cylinder, hydraulic line, flywheel and I believe starter as well as engine computer but you can run with the auto computer with codes... The A4LD and M5OD are the same length so no driveline changes needed and your transfer case will bolt up.

Was this on a Ranger forum or just another forum? I don't think any RBV forum would recommend keeping a A4LD for an offroad build... not that it matters, just curious.
Ok so I boogied over to my pick-n-pull and looked around. They said once i got there that there was no 4.0 manuals on the yard. I had a look and found one ford 4.0l sohc with a manual tranny that someone had somehow mistaken for a transfer case. I know this by the trail of bread crumbs/incorrect placement of parts lol. Anyhow, I wasn't sure if i could even put a 4.0 sohc tranny on a 4.0 ohv engine. I was amazed at how torn apart the rangers and explorers were. Then they closed and kicked my wife and I out. So on our way to the door I found the MAZDA SECTION!!! I found an almost complete, save for the engine(4.0l ohv as far as I can tell), 1994 Mazda B2.....600??? I forget but I do remember that it looked exactly like my truck inside and out, even the color, with a Merzder emblem. So huge long post made short. Can I swap this mazda stuff directly into my Ford? If so there is a huge section, 20+, of mazda trucks that remain untouched for whatever reason. Please let me know as soon as you can cuz I am going first thing to start snatching stuff if so. And thanks for your time guys. You are super helpful.

Mechanically, the Mazda trucks were identical to the Ford Rangers.

Only a few accessory wiring differences IIRC.

I use them for parts all the time for the exact reason.

Mazda generally had cooler interior options from my junkyard adventures

Should be. As with anything, verify from more than one source.

Btw, sohc trans fits ohv. Same block, just different heads.

There's an extra bolt in the back, sohc has one more. You don't need it.

Yes of course. I either read everything i can find prior to asking or i ask then take the info to everyone/where I can then read everything i can find. Over kills sometimes for sure but i rarely spend money on the wrong thing lol.

So can i put a sohc head on an ohv and turn it into an sohc?
No. The block is cast different at the front drivers side and rear pass side for the timing chains to clear.
There’s other differences, but those are the big ones.

Eh. Hang on to the ohv anyway. I'd trade what the sohc has on the high end for what the ohv has on the low end. Every time I slip the clutch I either diesel slightly or spin tire. Then again, I learned to drive stick on a peterbilt...

This... sort of.
The SOHC block has one of the bolts relocated as compared to the OHV, not an extra.
You can bolt a SOHC trans to a OHV block, you just leave the top right bolt out... some years the trans had both bolt holes.

This joke is banned.
2 questions. #1: I don't understand the joke. #2: wtf is a joke banned? Its a joke. There are supposed to ruffle feathers right? At least the good ones are. That's why they are funny. Please school me on this.

They're screwing with eachother... If you're bored go to your profile and add the "tailgate" to your viewable pages, it gets goofy in there :)

Sounds like you're getting some good ideas and found some good parts.

Personally I like the RBV's with the M5OD trans, some people hate how it shifts but I've been driving with them for 20 years and I have zero issues, sure they have their quirks and grind sometimes but not bad, and they're easy to rebuild... My favorite RBV automatic is the 4R70W in the 5.0L Explorers, I have a shift kit in mine and a 4x4 transfer case and a shimmed up limited slip and it's pretty sporty for a clapped out pig...
