i just bought a 1985 ford ranger 4x4 with a 2.8 5-speed. i wanna build a motor for this truck, it doesnt have to be a built all to hell engine but i want some power and still be able to drive it legally every day. i also have a 2.9 engine but which would be a better engine to build?

I have overhauled one and rebuilt one 2.8; both stock. I looked into modifications and they didn't seem to be worth the money. This is a great engine that should deliver 150,000 miles easily with a standard re-build. The engine that I overhauled (Expanded pistons and minimum work) had about 50,000 when it left my possession still running strong.

I don't know about 2.9's. I do know that you can't beat cubic inches. For power do a 302 swap if it is legal where you are. It may even be cheaper than a rebuild of the 2.8

You started right by asking - I just hope you get more answers and opinions. Read up as much as you can.

A disclaimer here: I'm over 60 so I think on a practical basis. I have built several engines in my past from mild to hot. Mild lasts longer than hot.

Edited note: I couldn't take a chance on a hotter cam because I'm in California. I have heard that some of the milder cams will pass CA smog, but I didn't want to chance it. A cam and Dura Spark may be your best bet if allowed where you live.

enginepaul i just rebuilt my 85 2.8 and ive got alot of lifter tapping. is this a normal thing for these engines. granted this is just the first few start ups after oil pressure has been built up. all the rockers have been adjusted to .014 and .016 but still got alot of ticking up top. would this be somethin that should go away after sometime of driving? your thoughts.

The lifters gap should be adjusted to .0025 inches. I just adjusted lifters on my dads engine and it doesnt make a sound. I hoope this helps you.

There should be some sound. If there is no sound, there isn't enough clearance when the engine is revving and the valves won't fully seat.

After a rebuild, the tappets (lifters) should be re-adjusted after about 500 to 1,00 miles. I do set mine on the tight side, but not too tight - maybe bring it down to 12 and .014. The noise is part of the charm; you get used to it faster than you get used to a wife with a big mouth.
