I was wondering if anyone has converted the stock ac compressor on a 94 4.0 liter ranger for use with onboard air. I was also wondering if it was a piston or impeller type compressor.

quite a few people have. im only halfway through my conversion, but ive used it a few times already and it works good. theres another user on here that hasnt had very good luck with it (he keeps burning them up). you need a means of feeding oil to the intake side of the compressor.

its a 10 cylinder, reed valve, piston type compressor.

hmm I know you need a tool oiler on the intake side, but has anyone taken the compressor apart and put air compressor rings in? Maybe some low friction oil-less rings?:dntknw:

I just had mine apart, well still do, and it doesn't look like the rings are removable. Good thing about mine, is the rings looked awesome and had no, none, nein, black goo in it. Looked fairly new actually!:D See what happens is, there is a teflon coating on the rings for low friction. Well many times this teflon coating likes to peel off and exposes the bare aluminum. The aluminum causes excessive heat build up and sooner or later it'll get so hot, it'll freeze up. The teflon coating takes form of a black goo/sludge. = Black Death. Since mine looks really good, I think I'm going to give it a shot.
