OK, Dumb question about H4656 Head lights

If I'm looking at the back of a H4656 Head light, which tab is the ground??

a little 12v tester should tell you. test the receptacle that the light plugs into. will give you the dim, the bright, and the ground.

I'm wiring up some driving lights made out of headlights, and needed to know which taps was ground, high, and low.

My Ranger right now doesn't have a wiring harness in it or I would have checked it, BUT, I did get my lazy rearend in gear and looked it up in the net, and this is what I found

so I guess I'm good at asking dumb questions when I little work on my part works out good.

I believe it should be the one with the black or black colored wire. the highs are lime and lows are red... or they were on my trucks.

Ok here is the reason I asked the dumb question.

I have these left over from my days of Truck Driving.

and I'm going to put these in them

Using these, just for laughs, I used 12g wire.

with the help of these.

here is the wiring made up for one.

drilled the hole bigger for the wiring.

The spade connectors that I bought where too small to fit the lights, so I broke out the Weller and soldered them.

I had to also change out the mounting bolts, the other where pretty rusted and such, but here is the final product just waiting to get mounted.

I'm going to make a special bracket to hold the switch for turning them on, it will be a on-off-on switch so I can use either the low beam side or the high beam side.

I'll also be hiding it so I don't have a fugly switch on my nice clean all stock dash board.

more to come, when I ain't for sure, it's raining for the next couple days, and the wife doesn't like for me to work when it's cold and raining outside.

glad you got it figured out. interesting idea on those lights. where on your truck are you mounting them?

I'm going to mount these one's on my 89 B2, out towards the ends of the bumpers in front of the tires, there are already holes in the bumper for them I just have to trim the black valance, then run the wires for them.

I have another set that are round that use the small H5006 Light, Those will go into my 88 Ranger, right behind the grill, I think I'll cut the grill a little for them to stick through and try to make it look like the Old Mustang Driving lights

Ok, here we go, I got some time today to install my Driving lights.


When I was young, putting switches every where on a dash didn't bother me, But now that I'm old, and enjoy the nicer things, I didn't want a fugly switch that didn't belong showing on my dash, so this is what I did, since I don't let anyone smoke in my BII, I didn't need a ashtray, so this is what happen to it.

I made a bracket to hold the switch

This is where it is hidden, if you notice that the switch is different, well it is, the one I bought was bad, and had to use another one I had.

Here they are on front of the BII. I need to aim them still, but I'll do that tomorrow.

I have the main wire going from the battery through a 30 amp fuse then a 40amp Relay, that relay is wired to a switched positive, so if I leave the on/off/on switch on by mistake, it won't run my battery down.


this concludes the installation of my Driving Lights on my BII

I would get or make some of those wire mesh grille guard things being that those are so low to the ground.

looks good! i agree with Original that they probably need some protection down there. with my luck, i'd be buying new bulbs weekly!
