Oil Question

Most newer engines have roller lifters and are designed for the thinner oils with less zinc so it isn't necessary. 10w-30 Rotella wouldn't hurt but there is also a 5w-40 Rotella synthetic that is a steal at about $13 a gallon.
A used oil analysis from Blackstone Labs or whoever is the only way to know for sure.
Much much oil info at www.BobIsTheOilGuy.com, although look around the forums first and don't just jump in with "What oil is best for my ____?" because they're tired of hearing it.

I put whatever is cheapest in my B2. I sure hope I don't harm its delicate inner workings.

Mehe. Yeah you wouldn't want the lifters to start tapping.

I went through that several years ago. After I fixed it by pulling apart and cleaning the lifters and replacing the worn valvetrain components, lower end bearings and oil pump it hasn't done it since--and it gets the oil religiously changed twice a year with cheap stuff.

I think as long as you change it, you'll be fine. I bought it rattling in '01 I think and did the work the next year. So it has seen a lot of miles (40,000 probably as it was my daily driver up to 2 years ago) since and even on my cheap oil changes its running great--and quietly.

lol roooootella t.... that is the only oil my friend's dad puts in every vehicle their family has ever owned.. they have a lot of vehicles, most of them are diesel.. but we always joke about the rotella, because they always have gallons of it on hand, and his dad swears by it, obsessively..

a few of their vehicles: a 68 vette, to a grumman kubvan (vw rabbit diesel drivetrain), gasser rabbit, a few audi 100s gassers, they used to have a cedes diesel, they have a 6.2 chevy diesel rollback.. they just got a huge 4wd john deere last year.. and his son (my friend) has a 84 bmw 325es turbo he built (running on megasquirt)-- everything, everything, everything.. rotella :)

i got sucked into the mobil 1 synthetic thing... thats what my lysholm supercharged corrado got, and thats what the truck gets.. my 98 subaru gets some cheap high mileage castrol gimmick stuff though :)

my girlfriends dad used to change her jetta's oil with wolfshead.. i just cant trust a $10 oil change, when $5 of it was the oil filter.

even on its side!
Yeah, it sucks the engine doesn't die when you flop it.

Come to think of it, if memory serves, you don't know which part goes on the ground either.

my brother works in a diesel shop and all the guys who work there take full advantage of the large oil lines and change there cars oil with it every time they change there oil. granted these guys are not the brightest bunch but you would think if there was a big reason why not to use it in there cars one of em would of figured it out after all these years.

Diesel specific oil (used to be called "CD" still is maybe?) has an additive package that is supposed to hold all that black crap that they produce "in suspension" and keep it running clean until it's next service. It's sulfur from the fuel and such, and supposedly, gasoline engine oil isn't up to the task. So it stands to reason that heavy-duty oil in a gas engine can do no harm. Additionally, I've worked in heavy duty truck shops that stocked only 15w40 "fleet" oil, and it went in everything...gas or diesel. Worst case scenario is that it has more additives and costs more than the other stuff.

Hey, even when I had it that Rmbler was old.
