Oil Consumption

I THINK I FOUND IT!!!!!!!!!!

I washed down the entire underside of the engine and tranny. The transmission pan, exhaust crossover pipe, and bottom of the bell housing is covered in oil and grime. Everything else is spotless.

I may have a rear main seal leak. I had the tranny dropped twice by an auto shop not mentioned previously to change the torque converter. So, That might very well explain things. Funny thing is the torque converter was not bad, it was the BELT TENSIONER. and I changed it in 15 minutes and the problem was solved. Needless to say I do not go there any more, and it is not one of the shops mentioned above.

I will run it for about 500 - 1000 miles to make sure this is actually the cause. I don't want to get my hopes up too high. If the seal is the issue, it is covered under warranty.

How long do you think it will take the dealership to change the rear main seal? Can they get this done in a day?

No. They have to drop the tranny to do that. If they start in the morning they may be able to do it in a day, seeing as its only a 2wd.

I suscribed to AllData today to get some other info, and it says the job is 4.8 hours for an auto tranny, and 18.60 for the seal. So I hope they can get it done. I do know mine will not be the only vehicle in the shop.

18.6hrs.... if you remove the engine.

4.8hrs if you remove the trans.

If it was me I would put a new oil pump seal on the tranny while it was apart just for sh&^s and giggles.

I second the tranny seals front and back as many times as it sounds it has been in and out. Old saying OZ of prevention better than LB of cure. Their in its out shouldn't add to much more on the bill.

Rear Main

Rear main on your truck is piece of cake, those seals will only take so much heat anyway so i'd say that's one of your problems. One quart of oil every 3k is minimal, with truck getting that hot I personally would run thicker oil in it , at least 10w30, best of luck.
