OHV Aluminum Intake Manifold Differences

I'm not sure that there would be any benefit to putting an older intake onto a newer engine other than maybe the metal part being more durable... I am not aware that the plastic intake was ever a problem though. Probably more trouble than it's worth to retrofit it.

My '99 4.0L has a plastic upper and an aluminum lower. I'd also be interested in knowing if the '90-'94 aluminum upper would fit on my '99 aluminum lower.

That's actually the desired end-game that caused me to start this thread. So far it would seem we don't have a definitive "yes", just a "maybe probably yes".

I'm pretty sure it's been done before. You may have problems finding an aluminum upper that is setup for EGR though.

My general observation has been that the Ranger 4.0 does NOT have EGR while the Explorer 4.0 DOES.

93 Explorer may or may not
94 Explorer will for sure
90-93 Ranger will not
94 Ranger may or may not - I have seen both
Same goes for cam sensors.

That is just my observation from about 25 4.0 powered trucks I parted out.

Over the past few months I've done some junkyarding and my findings pretty much match what you've indicated above. My question today relates to the cam sensor, as I've only found it on engines that also have EGR. Why? In fact, why is the cam sensor there at all on EEC-IV applications? Other than CA vehicles, I don't think any of them got SEFI until EEC-V, right? My understanding is that the only use of the cam sensor output is for SEFI.

One other related data-point & question I'll add.... As we know, the Rangers got EEC-V in 1995, while the Explorer continued on with EEC-IV in 1995. However, the 1995 Explorer got the plastic intake, which is generally associated with the EEC-V vehicles. Did it also get the CH244B 95TM Closed Chamber head in 1995 or did that wait until EEC-V in 1996? I believe the 1995 Ranger 4.0 got the 95TM heads.

I'm gonna say that the cam sensor was phased in before change to SEFI. Production schedules and all. The 94 Aerostar engine I got was wired like SEFI but didn't have a cam sensor. Now that doesn't make sense.

It all doesn't make sense! Why have a cam sensor and the wiring to support it, if you don't have SEFI? Is there some other use for the cam sensor output that we're not aware of?

And I agree, your Aerostar example COMPLETELY doesn't make sense!
