Odo tampering via speed gear

How much more would you be willing to pay?

For me that like a year or a year or a half of driving. On a 15/ 20 year old truck ( most trucks with those kind of miles are going to be around there anyway.) that means almost nothing.....

At least 1000$.

I say 1000$ because when I first started driving, complete shitboxes that had a fresh inspection (but probably wouldn't take another one next year) usually sold for about 1000$. You'd have a legal vehicle for a year.

A few people I know would only buy vehicles like that... Run them for a year and then sell them off once the sticker runs out for as close to that 1000$ as they could get. Up this way, it's pretty easy to find something mechanically sound, but is going to lose the battle with rust. Pick a good one and it won't need anything besides an oil change or two while you own it.

These days those sorts of vehicles go for 2k minumum.. more If you want a truck.

remember when 500/600 $ would get you something good enough for a few years? now a roller with no engine/transmission is more than that.

The older pickups only have digit odometers. So does it really matter? Unless your an one owner and you 100% now the mileage. Today you have Facebook after facebook post 45K miles... I saw one the other day on a 89 bronco II. The guy claimed it had 25K miles on it. Seats were ripped, no rubber left on the brake or throttle petal.... I mean come on? and he wanted like 5K for the thing and it wasn't nice. On a 20-30 year old pickup, miles don't matter.....

Mine was off when I bought it. The concern was getting a ticket. I had to drive at 60mph and it would be going near 70.
A big problem with OBS full size Fords was the speedometer bouncing. My F-150 starts bouncing at over 45 mph. It’s not cable driven either. It’s not as bad as it was though, at one point it would bounce between 50 and 75 when you were doing 65 (clocked with GPS). I know cable driven ones have a tendency to do stuff like that too.

My '92 did that bad once you got above 50mph. The faster you went the worse it got. 70mph it would be slamming back and forth off the pegs. Hilarious the first time I saw it.

Yup, faster you go, the more violent the movement :icon_rofl:

My buddys 85 monte speedo bounces all over the place like a maniac, it only bounces up to the speed your actually going though so it's not quite as annoying lol.

From the factory my 2001 Honda is off by 5mph at 80mph. So my car reads that is has far more miles than it actually does. I don't think anyone is really worrying about it, though the thought has crossed my mind.
