I've looked up some 302s for my Ranger and found a hand full of short blocks.

Since I'm a noob and this stuff could you guys enlighten me?

I'm guessin you don't know what a "short block" is ? A short block is the lower engine assembly (block, crank, rods, pistons camshaft & timing set) minus the heads, intake and FEAD (Front End Accessory Drive, alternator, waterpump, powersteering pump, etc) also doesn't include the oil pan, but sometimes includes the oilpump. A long block includes the short block assembly plus the heads. A crate motor has all of the above, plus the intake, oilpan, valve covers and the timing cover and waterpump
