Noob gear ratio question

OK...I have a 1993 2 wheel drive ranger, 5 speed with a 3.0. I put a cheapo 4 inch lift for the time being. I am running 265 75 16's now and the truck barely holds speed in 5th. How do I find out what rear end gear I have now and what gear should I put in it? Yes I know that this question has been asked a hundred times but I was too lazy to search....and besides...you experts need something to do anyway. THANKS IN ADVANCE

Well, become un-lazy and search. Aren't those around 31s? I'd suggest 4.10 if so,if they're bigger, 4.56.

The online conversion calculator says 31.6 so yeah right about there.

4.10's wil help

4.56's most likely the best.

4.88's if you ever plan on going bigger.

Not sure. Just got the truck about a month ago and plan on goin full blast with it in the future. Equal length i beams, king coil overs, 3 link rear, etc. I looked on the sticker in the door but didn't see info of rear end gear. Can I use the VIN to find out?

If you're having problems holding speed in 5th, don't get 4.56 gears like everyone else says.
The bigger gears will give you better acceleration, but the low-torque 3.0 will have even more problems at top speed. Gears may not be the answer for you. invest the 500+ dollars into gaining some power from that motor instead, say exhaust and reprogram

So.......the tag in the door had a axle code of 84. Using the link that dogboy was too lazy to read for me I found that I have 3.45 ratio. No wonder it feels like I take off in 2nd gear. I should then change to say....4.10s. But like 847alexc suggested maybe other things to help in the power department. Any good suggestions on minor power improvements to the 3.0?

3.47 are very low in my opinion, haha. Since you have a 2wd reargearing would not be that expencive either. With that tire size I think you should be running 4.10's, but that is my opnion (Basicly what Ranger44 said). From what I have heard, the 3.0L's cruize best at 3K RPM, that is where they are happiest and get the best milage.

Does it have a problem holding speed in 5th becuase the RPMS are too low ( I'm assuming that's why)?

Thats exactly what it is....too low RPM in 5th to maintain speed with ANY slope what so ever. On flat roads I can keep the speed up but NO acceleration. Should I just find another complete rear end with 4.10s?

I would go with 4.56 or 4.88s.

Or a Viper V10 or Triton V10, or some absurd engine.

Go with a J-yard 4.10 7.5. It's the cheapest way to go.

And with you only having 3.54's, you'll feel a difference going to the 4.10's.
