Noise / clunk / skip in 4x4 High

I will almost gaurantee it is the transfer case. Don't waste your money getting it repaired, just order a cheap one off of ebay and swap it in. I wasted a lot of money trying to fix the same problem, and finally just swapped out the t-case... They have a chain in there that gets loose, and other things can get out of whack too. Not worth fixing, and I have come to believe that they cannot be rebuilt effectively. I got a 1354 off of ebay for around $120 + shipping, so it is not that big off a risk to swap them out.

:headbang:

Thats what im starting to think.. Im not a mechanic, but mechanical. How big of a job is it to swap the transfer case out?

I swapped out my E1354 with a manual , complete swap cost me 3 hours time .

Did you buy a new transfer case or one out of a wrecked truck? What should a guy expect to pay for one of these?

I bought a used T/C from a 91 Explorer, paid a hundred dollars.

Hey all, so i changed out my transfer case... the problem is still there. any ideas? im thinking maybe a problem with the front diff or hubs. any opinions would be very appeciated!

Turbotaguy or Heliguy,

Did you ever find out what the problem was? I'm still having the same problem and been "living" with it. I know one of these days something is going to snap.

Hey, Its been a while but I thought I would check back for more info... Clint, I too am just "living" with it. I basically dont use 4x4 unless its really needed and Im going slow Other than that I'm at a loss and am thinking of just getting a new truck soon anyway... It wont be a Ford.

I was driving on the beach last week and had a similar problem. When I got into the deep stuff, it would make multiple loud clunks as if there was some kind of skipping going on. Not sure if it was T case, CV joints, or the axle itself. If I was moving along, all was cool, but when I would get bogged down in the tough stuff, BAM!

If it turns out to be the T case, I am gonna try and find a manual setup! That electric knob setup is do-do!

Regardless its never a good idea to drive a part time t-case locked in 4wd on dry high traction surfaces, there are too many variables that cause the wheels to travel DIFFERENT distances to risk driveline/t-case/u-joint failure. It just isn't worth it and its completely avoidable. Even if its in a straight line as rarely are the wheels gonna go the same distance, thats why the differential was invented.

Yeah, one winter I forgot to put it back into 2wd and went into a parking garage. I was turning and going downhill at the same time. It got so bound up it stopped moving. I had to back it up and take it out of 4x4!

Did you have to change anything computer wise? I am dying to make this swap! Didn't know you could go with such an old T case/vehicle and have it work! Thanks for that info!
