No start

94 Ranger XLT 4.0 auto 4x4
This truck has always run perfectly till this weekend, wife took it to the store and returned. 20 minutes later, I go to start the truck and it starts rightaway, but can barely idle, very rough with no acceleration. It finally dies and I check a few connections and fuel inertia switch but find nothing amiss. 20 minutes later it starts right up. She goes to the store again and it wont at the store. I tell her to wait 20 minutes and try again, it starts right up.
A suggestions? EEC Mod?

not sure what the eec is... but when was the last time you changed the fule filter/pump? in my old crx i have the sae prob and it turned out that something was floating up in there and the suction would block it up and then after letting it sit would let it setl and run fine.. just a thought..

No Start

EEC is an "Electronic Engine Control Microprosser. A frien has been going through the same problem, and after repacing a bunch of crap it turned out to be the microprosser. Fuel filter was changed a couple months ago.

You may want to check the fuel pump relay and EEC relay. They're both located in the power distribution box and they both go for about $10.00 - $15.00 at an auto parts store. The fuel pump relay may be the problem if you DO NOT hear a "whir" or "humming" sound coming from underneath the truck on the driver's side when you turn the ignition key on - just before the starter cranks (listen carefully - roll the window down if you have to). If the EEC relay is bad, you will experince the same symptom - no whir or humming noise coming from underneath the truck on the driver's side AND the "Check Engine" light on the dash doesn't come on for a secon or two like the other trouble lights on the dash (like the antilock brake light).

If either one of these relays is bad, they can cause an intermittent starting problem that might be hard to track. I've had problems with both relays and two different dealers couldn't identify them as the root cause. They will not show up on a "KOEO" test with a code reader. If your truck cranks but will not start, check for the symtoms I described above. If you're stuck out on the road some place, turning the ignition key on, but not cranking the engine and tapping the relays gently might help you get the truck started - listen for the "whir" or "hum" and look to see that the "check engine" light is on before cranking the engine.

I bought a new relay for 7.00, but when I went to install it I noticed lots of dust and crap in the distribution box so I blew everything out really good and decided to wait and see. Everything has been just perfect since. Sometimes you don't need to replace things, just put a new one in the glove box, (scares the hell out of the troublesome part)
