no speeding ticket in my future....

There must be quite a diierence between the 2.8 and 2.9 because on stock setup with 3" lift and 31's my 2.9 rolls pretty nice, until of course it warms up and then at 50 youll fly by me since ill be sitting there til mine cools down, I have a phantom stumble. wish you the best with a gear change

You probably have 3.45 gears. Find a parts truck with an A4LD that has a D7 or 47 axle code (4.10). Swap the front diff and rear axle. Enjoy normal acceleration again.

thanks guys,
A little vin decoding would confirm,
you're probably right, I appreciate
the input. Believe it or not, I'm trying
to finish up painting my house, as it's for
sale and its November, 2 days off a week and
been fighting the rain here....
Certainly not like I'm gonna be taking
a long road trip in it or anything.
At least I've got a 4 x 4 for the coming
Iowa snows- guess I need to get the
bumper sticker - "you can go fast, I can go anywhere" !!!
thanks again

Enough with the 2.8 bashin'!! :thefinger:

O.P., You have something else going on, most likely in that P.O.S TFI carb setup which IS worthless. When I had the original engine/carb setup running 31s, I had the exact same problem. If I did shift to 5th I would actually slow down.

I had an extra 2.8 that had just been rebuilt from an 85 B2 that my brother borrowed from me one day, the engine had less than 7k on it when he rolled it & totalled it out. I pulled my 84 2.8 out of my B2 & put it in my 84 Ranger & Durasparked it, it is still running today...it's a 25 year old engine that has never been apart!!

Long story short, I put the freshly rebuilt 85 B2 2.8 in my 84 B2 & Durasparked it, I am currently running 31s, with 3.73s & a 5 spd. I can run over 70 ( with an uncalibrated speedo) in 5th gear. I do have to down shift to 4th if I come to a long upgrade but she rolls right on!
