no reverse or second

coming home from work the other day i stoped at a light and no clunk noise or anything but when i was to go it stayed in first gear lol all the way to redline but would not shift. then when i finnaly did get home i went to back in and found i had no reverse lol. i been trying to diagnosis it but all i seem to find so far is that theres no reverse and wont shift to 2nd gear and now theres a whining noise coming from under neath the car that varies with RPMs . anythoughts be appreciated

What does the fluid look like?

Mine did that and the fluid was black with metal filings and smelled like burnt popcorn... tranny was toast.

it might need fluid. my trans had a leak at the front seal and if it leaked to much out it wouldn't engage in 1st. also when i rebuilt my engine it took a few drives before i got the fluid at the right level. i drained the torque converter and couldnt find out how much to put back in.. after all that mess it shifts good now. if you drive it around to much like that you could overheat the TQ and ruin it and it wont ever lock up. hell you might have already screwed it up. when its warmed up and idling in park check the fluid level. if its low add a half quart or so until its good test drive it check it again.
