no 4x4

i have a 1999 ranger and the 4x4 doesn't work.When i try to lock it in the 4hi and the 4low light just flash.I hear a clicking noise but thats it.Is my shift motor bad? im trying to figure this out and it's driving me crazy!!!

First you need to check if your hubs are working properly, if they are, you have a transfer case issue.

i wouldn 't think that it's a transfer case. The clicking is in the cab.I cant hear the shift motor when i turn the switch for the 4wheel drive

I just had to replace the transfer case shift motor last week, I would hear a click but it would not change out of 4 low. Be prepared this thing cost me $430.00 CDN plus tax unless you can get a good used one but that is hit and miss.

First you need to check if your hubs are working properly, if they are, you have a transfer case issue.

The computer cannot sense if the hubs are working properly or not, and if they were busted it would not trigger the lights.

Take the shift motor off again or tap it with a hammer. They really aren't hard to disassemble and clean.

You my friend got ripped off!! Go to the scrap yard and remove one yourself ,,should get one for a reasonable price,,$20 to $40.
