There is also not any old car parts/random tools piled up on the coffee table or in the corner behind the couch.

In the Navy, during personnel inspections, if you had a little thread poking out of the seam on your uniform it was called an irish pennant. A pennant is a flag. Therefore, the threads themselves were flags.
