is a 4x4 and a 2 wheel drive 5 speed the same, need to replace my tranny in an 98 bII 4X4, I am attempting to rebuild it but need a backup plan if i fail,will buy a used one

No they are not. The 2 wheel drive transmission's main shaft is longer and you can't just unbolt the tailhousing from the 2wd and expect the 4x4 tailhousing to work. 89 BII probably has the FM146, dump it and get the M5OD-R1.

what does this trans come in

The M5OD should be in any 5 speed explorer or ranger from about 90 or so on with the 4.0.
If im not mistaken.
