What would the price be for a re-man short block? Back when, you could order short blocks from the local parts stores(20+ years ago in CA), and come out ahead or just about even with the cost of the parts. A former co-worker used to tell tales of using leather to replace worn babbit in old (I mean OLD) cars. It would start knocking, and he'd pull to the side of the road, hopefully over a ditch, drop the pan, and put more leather into the big end rod bearing, replace the pan, and fill with oil. He used to also describe a loose engine as one where the pistons would change bores now and again. Miss him as a good friend...
Any way, you could also check what a local shop would charge to repair your engine, unless by 'blowing up' you mean some parts tried to escape, and put holes in places where they should not be...
