New guy from PA

Hello all, new guy from the rust belt that is northwest PA. My brother used this site extensively while he was doing a number of repairs to his ranger, so i thought I would join up. I have a 1996 explorer xlt that due to the abundance of salt here has a few rust issues. The main one is a leaky gas tank, I was wondering if anyone knows of a place that sells a plastic tank for the explorer or one that would work. Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide.

Rockauto.com lists that tank at ~$162.

I've had success in the past with sealing a metal fuel tank (my 83 Ranger, years ago).

They sell a sealer (two part mix) that hardens like hard rubber. I put that under my mount straps to seal all the pinholes. The strap cushion was not present which I'm sure caused my problem in the first place.

Thanks for the quick reply, I had thought about sealing it with a kit like the one eastwood sells, but this is the third time its started leaking with the last 2 being in the exact same spot and it seems inevitable to me that it will leak again no matter what I try to seal it with. This is why I am looking for a plastic tank so I didn't have to worry about it rusting out again.

Would a plastic tank from a ranger work? I'm not really concerned with the potential loss of volume as i don't do a ton of driving and I'm rarely more than a mile or 2 from a gas station.

I don't know if the Ranger tank will fit, but someone else may have that info.

The Rockauto tanks are metal. Paint it, install it and call it good for many years. It'll probably outlast the rest of the vehicle.

The sealer I used was applied to the exterior. MIL-S-8802 (google it)

Any idea how much of that stuff would be needed to coat the tank? The tank measurements are 54-1/2" X 16-1/2" X 13". I searched on google for a couple hours and couldn't find how much each quart or pint would cover.
