Hi All,

I believe I might have a transmission issue and would like to verify.

I have a 2000 Ranger, 3.0l with a 5 speed transmission. 90% sure that it is a M5OD-R1. This is my daily driver and runs good. It has 200,100 miles on it. The clutch was replaced in 2012 at 151,000.

The possible issue is;

There seems to be a noise coming from the transmission. The sound is like a bad wheel bearing noise to me.

The sound is there in all gears only when driving. Depressing the clutch makes no difference. The only time the sound goes away while driving is when I take it out of gear. It doesn't matter if it is cold or hot. Other than the noise, the truck seems to run fine.

EDIT: I can hear it very faintly while parked. Almost unnoticeable. I had to bend down close to the shifter to hear it. With clutch in or out, in neutral. Actually never noticed it before while stationary.

I have checked, drained and refilled the transmission. The fluid seemed normal and I saw no metal shavings.

Any insight to this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Pete

Probably an input shaft bearing.

Not to distract from the subject, but when you drain the oil go a step farther and reach inside with whatever finger you can and see if anything loose was left behind. That's how I found a piece from a bearing cage when first inspecting mine in depth after the previous owner had done 230,000. I may have have even stuck an extension magnet in there
