4:10 is all you will need with 33's. I run 33x12.5x15's with a 4:10 and I get right at 24 mpg on the highway. Now, I have a 4.0. My buddies who have the 2500 Mazda or a Ranger with the 4 banger with 33's are running 4:10 as well and they love it. They get good gas mileage as well. You can go 4:88 at the most and that is as much as you should go.

Uhh yeah... I have 4.10s and 225/70s and it blows.

Go with at least 4.88s.

Did you regear your speedometer when you put 31s on it? You should be closer to 2500 at 70 with your current setup. However, if you went from 26's to 31's without regearing your speedo it would be off by a factor of about 1.2. At an indicated 70 mph, you would actually be going 84, and turning around 3k rpm. It appears there are varying preferences about what gears are best. To each their own. I love the 5.13s in my truck and wouldn't run anything else in hindsight. That said, my motor is happier with a little more rpm than a stock 4cyl, and a stocker may work better with longer gears.

i drive 2.0 SOHC Dodge neon atm...I Can't stand it. only way i'll ever touch a 4 cylinder again is if it's a turbo.

The speedo will be off if you change tire size, regardless of how it works. However, most, if not all speedos read fast stock, and will be closer to correct with slightly larger tires. I also have yet to see a GPS be too far off. Something still seems wrong with your rpm and speed though. 31" tires turn about 650 rpm at 60mph. 650 times a 4.10 gear =2665 times a .79 overdrive =2105rpm at 60. 70 divided by 60 = about 1.17 times 2105=2455 rpm at 70mph. The rpm will be a little higher because tires squat a little, but it should not be by a lot. Correct me if my math is wrong or your trans has something other than a .79 overdrive.

yesterday i drove by like 3 of those radar things on the highway that tell you how fast your going... my speedo is 5mph slow haha i guess the gps was a little off

The surest way to check a speedometer that I have found so far is to make a pass at the drag strip. Just watch the speedo as you cross the finish and your actual speed will be on the time slip. It can also help to try to hold the speed at a round number like 75 or 80 as you get near the finish. You can check your rpm at this time as well and be able to calculate what rpm you will turn based on speed and gear. Jraymer, that Neon would be a lot of fun with a 100 shot.

I ran 37s with 4:56 and it was too tall. 35 with 4:56 was PURRRFECT. Geared my buddy's 3.0 auto on 33's to 4:56 and it was perfect. I have 4:56 with 33's now with 4L/Man and I hate driving on the freeway in the truck. at 70 I'm turning 3 grand. I don't drive 70. So on the interstate I turn 3500 at 75-80. not to mention the speedo is off by 10 mph.

If you drive on the freeway a lot, stick with 4:56. More around town, Offroad, type stuff, 4:88. JMO

that neon would be fun if it would die...so i can drive my ranger daily instead. it doesn't sound too ricey. but it's only stock and has like 180k on it.

only thing i like about it is going around that curves that say 30 instead of 45 i do 50 around! and i like how people think they're kinda crappy cars. this one hasn't really needed anything since i started driving it( only an oil pressure valve or w/e) . i do like 30 down the back roads which gives the suspension hell and the only thing that's wrong is the rear strut tower gave out..after like 2 years of that. oh and i almost ran it out of oil and tranny fluid...filled them back up and no problems so far. pretty damn reliable if you ask me!
