The head is cracked in my 4.0 OHV in my 2000 XLT 4x4. I am looking to possibly throw a 302 in it as it is just as much of a job to replace heads. One thing I am concerned about is the gas milage, I get 22 on the hwy with the 4.0 when it wasn't cracked, will I be able to get somewhere near tha same with the 302?

My next question is, who near Saint Cloud, MN is willing to do tha transplant since I am over here in Afghanistan and need tha truck running when I get back being it is my only transportation? As of today (14May2011), I only have about 4 months to go before I am home again on US soil. Thank you for any help that is given. My wife and my brother who are in MN as well, can trailer the truck to your shop and take care of the monies when the project is completed. Thank you again for any help given!

With a fuel injected late model 302 (pick the right year Explorer 5.0 for the easiest swap) and you will get much better mileage than any 4.0.

My 4.0 OHV probably averaged 18-19mpg, with a highway best of 22. My 1992 Mustang-based 5.0 smokes that handily.

If you're worried about fuel economy, forget doing a V8, you cannot afford it the swap, you cannot afford the extra fuel, cause your right foot is going to gain twenty pounds once you've completed the swap.

I get about the same as my 3.0 did and I have the occasional heavy foot.
