OK i have Ben thinking about getting a 70 some ford 4x4 truck because they are near indestructible and i found one but I'm not sure what year it is . i don't know if the guy will sell it or not but i want to know the year. so i was wondering when ford changed to the square headlights? this one has round headlights so would that put it in the 70-77 range? by the way i really would like to have this one because it has a 460 big block and a granny 4 speed but it hasn't ran in several years and i know that somthing is wrong with it . also how much do u think it would be worth . its in decent shape but doesnt run. thanks

Not sure on value, but i believe that ford went, TTB, square headlights, and body change in 1980 on those trucks.

Yes 1978-79 were the square headlights. The 460 bumps up the value as well as with the 4-speed. That's a killer combination! The vaule is iffy. It all depends on 4x4 or 2wd, body shape, running condition, etc.

But if you are just looking for a good older mud/play truck I would really look into a 70s and 80s model (80s if you dont have to worry bout emissions) 4x4 F100-150 with a 6-cyl 300 with a granny 4-speed. Those things are truely bullet proof. I have quite a few friends with those for mud trucks and they never die at all. 4 speed gives it plenty of torque. I have one friend with one thats built (cam, carb, etc) not too extreme and I swear that 300 has as much torque as a mild built 460. It's crazy haha. but the 300s are easier to find but with a 4speed thats different.

Good luck with your search though, let us know how it goes. 70s are the best years IMO

I've owned 34 '73-'79 Ford pickups.
To be a 460 w/round lights would make it a '77 or early '78 Late '78 and '79 had square.
Ford used the 360 and 390 for BB til '76.
1981 was first TTB.
1978-1980 used Dana 44 open knuckle straight front axle w/coils.
1975-1977 used Dana 44 open knuckle straight front axle on leafs.
1973-1975 used closed knuckle ball straight front axle on leafs.
1973-1975 also had divorced transfer case w/all years using New Process 235 gear driven.
1973-1977 had a vetical bar in the centre of the grille, with plastic pieces each side.
1976-1977 had black bezels around the headlights.
1978-1979 had a six sided one piece plastic grille.
Tilt steering column was only avail. in 1978 and 1979.

x2. My uncle has a 78 F150. It came with round headlights and he got a kit to change it to square ones. He had the truck restored and it was appraised last year at $17000. he is kicking himself now for doing that.
