1) Swap in a 5.0L

- or -

Check it over, do a tune-up and so forth. I bought a Bronco II once that started fine and ran but it was totally gutless. I wrote it off as being a typical 2.9L with a slushbox tranny and drove it for a week or two until I could get the parts for a tune up. After the tune up, it ran 200% better than before. Plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, oil change (I'll sometimes add a cup - 1/4 of a quart - of regular ATF to the oil to help clean things and swell up any seals that are drying out) and run a motorcraft oil filter.

2) 16" rims add a little more weight. I'd stick with the 15" rims and run maybe a 235/75/15 or 31x10.5x15 depending on what gearing you have and if it is a 2wd or 4x4. Find the most aggressive AT pattern tire you can (don't go with BFG AT tires, mud turns them into chocolate doughnuts, you need something with more bite than that).

Get an F150 or a Jeep.

and don't go overboard on tire size, it'll just slow you down more

You're going to be in hot pursuit of those geese. I'd get a 460 in there.
