Need holley help...

distributer needs to be hooked to the venturi vacuum port on the carb.

the manifold vacuum decreases when the throttle is openned, and this is exactly when the advance is needed.the venturi vacuum increases when the throttle is openned, pulling more advance onto the distributer.

Hmmm...interesting...I might try that...but the manifold was recommended to me by someone on here years ago and I've used it since without any problems...but that started on the original carb and when I swapped to this one I figured it would work as well...

Not sure though if I even have a venturi vac line on the 5200...now I will have to look it up and try it...thanks~

the vac nipple that holley recommends is actually a ported vacuum just for distys

Cool...go for it!

all carbs will have one-on the holley it should be on the right hand side behind the float bowl just above the idle mix screw.

well i change from #61 jets to #53 jets in my holley 350 cfm 2bbl, and im getting some off idle hesitation. not WOT, its fine.

this tells me it's got nothing to do with jet size.

main jets only come fully into play on the fuel mix stage from above 1/2 throttle.if wot is fine, with no lean pop then jet size is ok.this can be confirmed by doing a wot run, then shutting down the engine and putting it into neutral while you stop the vehicle.pull the plugs and check the color-if they are covered in a white sooty stuff,it's lean.if they are black it's rich.they should be an even tan color.

off idle is usually idle mix lean, not enough accelerator pump or not enough timing.

might also be an idea to check the power valve.

ok update...its only on take off about 1/4 throttle up until about 2k-2200 im guessing. i have no tach but i have a 4.0 low stall converter. also when at about 45-50 it goes into od i get the same "bog" but alot worse, it feels like its bucking/skipping. i know this is engine related not the tranny. also not sure y it would go into od at 45...kickdown linkage misadjusted? mine has the "rod" not a cable. how do i adjust it right with the screw on the kickdown carb lever? i never been able to find any info on i, after alot of searching.also drops way too low of a gear(about 55-65 wants to drop to 2nd with 1/2-3/4 throttle. how do i check the power valve...guesing vacuum guage

no wide open or 3/4 throttle problems. just takes off like its supposed to

also forgot to mention when i cold start it...runs like crap for a few miles. all this bog is really bad, and lean popping through carb unless i romp it

its allright, well just write it off as old timers disorder:icon_twisted: write WHAT off ? :icon_rofl:

It gits worse......I was thinking about cruising speed hesitation when I said .....up the jet size....

also.....I forgot about adjusting the linkage on the accelerator pump to eliminate the hesitation/bogging upon accelleration...

annnnnnnd....the vacuum port should NOT have vacuum at IDLE....but the vacuum should start/increase as the engine rpm is increased.....

sorry......i was wr..........wr.......wro......wrong....in my previous post...:bawling:

Absolutely make sure float level is right and fuel pressure is right first. Need to set your idle mixture second. Then move on to accel pump. My 4160 has different accel pump cams, but not real sure about your carb. Had to experiment with cams. Once it goes, move on to jets. A book will outline how to do all of this... Holley has good online videos also.

OK, thanks again...will check for one marked "Venturi"...lol...I do have a diagram of the carb, but the print is so small on some parts it might as well be Chinese...

Ah, BOG you say...now it makes more sense...this is what mine was doing when I found the primary jet was plugged...when I had WOT it would kick in and run as long as I kept the pedal at the point where the secondary was opening (mine is two stage, btw)...if yours is different...well, I've been wrong before...

However, you're changed the jets with no difference...

Sounds like something is plugged...preventing the primary from drawing fuel through the jet...

well i fixed it...and shes running like mad...at least for a 2.8

changed jets back to stock 61's. helped some. adjusted float...was way too low, gave me a little probs i kept adjusting with the screw not the nut. finally got it right. next i set the idle mixture, once again it was all ****ed up one was at a turn and a half other was bout half a turn in(from holley like that!) im gettiing 20hg at idle. thats the highest/steadest i could get. turned down the curb idle since it went up when i did idle mixture. no more hesitation/bog/surging, and not getting any black smoke, which was why i jetted down.. idle mix was way lean and no more cold hard starts.

didnt put vac advance for disty on carbs ported vac, i need some longer hose

thanks guys!!!!:icon_thumby:

nothing like success without excess...

Looks like psycho nailed it for you though...

he sure did. running better then ever and i can actually use my man choke without it doing stupid shit

Cool...I've learned a few things from this thread...:)

I just readjusted my fuel mixture...had it to 1 1/2 turns and it seemed like the engine was trying hard but couldn't make any more power...added a 1/4 turn to it and it makes quite a difference...

When I had it higher (almost two turns) and was going through gas like crazy (due to the float setting and the flooding/seeping of gas into the secondary when I shut the engine off) I had turned it down to see if that was the fuel consumption problem...but the engine runs way better with that added 1/4 turn...

and i watched like every holley video on youtube because u gave me the idea about it. i never woulda thought to check there. they even told u what to do if u take the lock screw out too far and the seat drops into the bowl(which happend 3 times lol)

Hey.....what about me......I told him everything he SHOULDN'T have done...........:icon_rofl: !!!!!!
