Need help with ball joints

I have a 1999 ranger (with stock suspension) that has bad lower ball joints. The Haynes manual says that the whole lower control arm must be replaced, but I can buy the ball joints at Auto Zone. Do they write this because it is hard to replace the ball joints? I do have access to a press. Also, do I need a special tool to remove the torsion rods, or can I relieve the tension with the adjustment bolts? Thanks.

The lowers can be pressed out with the arms still on the vehicle with a simple ball joint press that can be rented from autozone. The uppers can't be replaced, you do have to buy the whole arm.
