need help with 4x4

my automatic hubs in my 02 will not lock in and the the 4x4 dash light dose not come on has anybody had this problem and can you tell me where to look to fix this problem

You don't have hubs on that year. I'd say check the shift motor contacts. Does it click or make any sort of noise when you turn the knob?

Yep your front drive axle is a live axle setup meaning the front hubs ar bolted to the axle and always spin. I agree that your shift motor is probably dirty and needs cleaned. hees a link.

It's almost certain to be the shift motor.

Like the others said, you have a live axle that is always engaged. The 4x4 tell-tale is operated by a hard contact in the transfer case, so if your lights aren't coming on the case isn't shifting.
