I’m looking for a decent android based tablet for my mother. Want one that is easy to see at any angle, min. 8gb internal storage, good battery life and no more than $200 (with NO contracts/wireless service). I was planning to get this for her for Xmas, but her smartphone I gave her to use as a tablet died today and I haven’t started research on tablets yet. No overpriced iPad and while she wants the windows tablet, its pretty expensive also. Any suggestions?

Any opinions on this one?

There are so many sub $200 tablets available now and they all seem to have their pros and cons. The best advice I can give you is go and play with them in the stores. Most of them have decent battery but the ability to add additional memory is a good thing, bluetooth is also a good thing to have but not essential.

You could look into the Nexus 7

Don't buy a Colby, most Android Apps won't work on it. I bought one because I wanted to downgrade my phone to save money, but quickly found out that the apps I liked on my phone wouldn't work on the tablet so it was extremely useless to me. Tablets, at least the Android ones aren't very good, apps don't always work, and the cheaper ones don't seem to work very well period, I had a lot of problems with mine freezing on certain screens, or getting stuck in either landscape or portrait modes. A lot of money to pay for something that doesn't work very well, or work with all of the apps.

That's exactly why I posted what I did. It sales with the sub $100 ($99 isn't really) price range, but actually come preloaded with Google Play. Might be the first one of its kind. Note that there are still many Apps the it probably simply isn't fast enough to run smoothly. (Games)

Also of note. I've only used Android on an old contract phone. (Pantech Crossover)

I ended up getting a Nexus 7. But after watching my son damn near break the laptop screen off this weekend, I’m now thinking of getting a tablet for the kids to use (he likes watch youtube vids of minecraft, PvsZ, etc). Does anybody have any options on some of the rugged looking tablets like the Nubi(sp?) etc? It needs to have the android OS. I also want it to have Bluetooth so I can get a BT keyboard/mouse combo (if a combo exists).

I have a better question now. I read the reviews on BB’s Nabi(sp?) tablet and it doesn’t sound too promising. But I have since updated the OS on the Nexus to 4.3 which supports other profiles and it got me thinking into just getting a “standard” tablet (nexus, galaxy tab, etc) and set it up for both my kids. With that being said, I have a few questions I hope someone can answer:

-my kids currently have a “wifi only” android smart phone in which they each have their own google accounts. If I set up a tablet for both their profiles, will everything they have installed on their phones show up in their own profile on the tablet and stay up to date with their phones (if they install an app on their phone will it also install in their own profile on the tablet)?

-If I do this, should I look for one with usable memory greater than 8gb? Each of their phones has 8gb each and I’m afraid with combined profiles, this would eat up a standard 8gb storage in no time. Yes I know I can expand memory by adding SD cards, but I don’t think that fully supplements internal memory (I’m currently having this problem with mine and my wifes razr m).

Any name brand Tablet for which OtterBox makes a "defender" series case
should prove to be nearly indestructible.

then again I was with a friend at the Verizon store this weekend getting his contacts transferred from his personal Samsung phone to his new company provided iPhone5
(which replaced a company provided Blackberry) and the manager of the store was having fun flinging a shiny new iPad in a Lifeproof enclosure around the store....

He admitted if the iPad was his personal property it wouldn't be as much fun

To answer your questions about apps and profiles, no they will not sync automatically some games and apps will sync scores and progress but only if the app is written to do so. As for the storage requirement if they have a lot of the same apps then you will have to install them to each profile but you only download it once. I may not have explained all that the best way possible but if you need to I can elaborate.
