Hello Everyone

Ok the truck is a 89 reg cab ranger. 4x4 2.9L with auto trans.

The problem is the trans will go into reverse just fine. But won't go into any forward gear easily at all. The only way we got it into gear is we had 2 guys physically push it and it dropped into gear about 5k rmp. Then it ran around just fine like normal it's just getting it into gear. Has anyone ever had this problem or know what is the cause or solution? Dad doesn't know trucks well but he thinks that might be loose or bad band. He said tranny's have bands in them. I'm not sure and have no clue on what it is or how to fix it. Any and all help is welcome. Thanks, guys Keep On Trucking!

im assuming its the A4LD auto tranny. it might just be a shifter linkage adjustment.
check out the first part of this page: http://www.autozone.com/shopping/repairGuide.htm?pageId=0900c15280078217#hd1-1-1

could be a loose band too (remember when adjusting them the tighter the adjust nut is the looser the band)
Here is how to adjust them:
"Both band adjustment screws are located on the left side of transmission, the front being the overdrive band and the rear being the intermediate band adjustment screw. Both adjustment screws use the same procedure for adjustment.

Remove and discard locking nut from adjustment screw.

Install a new locking nut but do not tighten.

Using a torque wrench, tighten the adjusting screw to 10 ft. lbs. (13.5 Nm).

Back off adjusting screw exactly 2 turns.

Hold adjusting screw from turning. Tighten locknut to 35-45 ft. lbs. (47-61 Nm)."

Thanks for the hints but the picture you provided is for a auto tranny with the shifter on the floor. How ever our shift is on the colum not the floor does that change anything?

Any one else have any suggestions or ideas on what's going on here? Any comments would be appreciated thanks.

first auto tranny have band, clutch and one way clutch
i have a book on this tranny and if it works fine in all gears but 1 it is a one way clutch and the only fix is to replace it hope this helps

after rereading your post it could also be your manual valve inside your valve body

there are different parts up top for the shifter on the column but i think they should look similar from underneath. im pretty sure the adjustment nut will be the same
