Need Bigger Fuel Tank For 89ext Cab

IF anyone has sucessfully installed a bronco2 tank in the back of a Supercab ranger I haven't heard of it.

I frankly don't believe it's practical.
I would use the word "possible" Except I've seen a rolls-royce Merlin Aircraft engine installed into a '57chevy race car, so "possible" is a bit different....

THE issues are:
1)fuel filler pipe location, the bronco2 tanks filler neck is too far forward.
2)The bronco2 tank sticks up above the frame and interferes
with the underside of the bed.
3)The bronco2 tank has a MAJOR interference issue with the drivers
side upper shock mount.
Though to be more precise the frame crossmember that the tank hangs from
interferes wiht the shock mount.

I have dual tanks* in my '87 Ranger supercab

But L O N G before I installed the second tank behind the axle I retrofitted the plastic tank from a 1993 supercab.

Your '89 has a 17gallon tank, the later tank can hold 23 and change,
if you make some artistic modifications to the vent system.

a behind the axle tank? The tank I used is one from a 1991 F350.
It's also plastic and holds 19gallons. (actually almost 21 "Topped up")

I have ANOTHER tank mounted in the bed but that's another story...

I only have a 4.0 but I drive to Wyoming a couple times a year.

Have youn read any of the other ranger owners info?, that have done this swap and have been practical.:icon_confused:

I've read a lot of people answering with repeated rumor about
what will and will not fit.

I can say that with a bare frame a tank and a collection of steel
and two YEARS to ponder the problem I was unable to figuire out
how to mount a Bronco2 tank in the back of a Ranger with a short bed.

In a Ranger with a long box it's relatively easy.

as an update I've determined that the capacity of the F350 tank I'm
using is 21.55gallons (topped up with standing fuel visible in the filler neck)

And as I said that tak is PLASTIC and DOES fit behind the axle in a supercab/shortbox
Infact it fit so easily it almost looks like it was designed to

I mounted it with two pieces of square tubing, because the "Tank" doesn't actually mount to anything. the tank, straps and skid plate are an integrated assembly
that bots to the frame as a set, so I just had to add a piece of tubing
(angle iron would have worked) to bolt the skid plate to...

SOME trimming of the crossmember above the bumper brackets was required, but the fuel filler lined up perfectly.

I used the F-series hose (slightly shortened)
I dont recall eactly what filler assembly I used
but I think it was the one from the F-350 but
IIRC I had to unsolder the Diesel flapper from it and
solder in an unleaded restrictor into it.

Electrically my fuel system is wired with the factory harness and switch.

And I'm using the stock selector valve, but I needed to relocate the valve
for clearance Vs the 22-point-something main tank, which is considerably longer than the 14gallon fuel tank my '87 supercab came with from the factory.

Yeah, I have dual tanks.
Yeah, They are each atleast 8gallons larger than
the tanks the factory would have put in those locations...

And....

It...

Still....

wasn't NEARLY enough...

thus the 40gallon tank mounted in the bed "Disguised" as
a crossbed diamond-plate toolbox

And it still isn't enough.

what I want is a capacity/mileage combination that will allow me
to go from my driveway in Palmerton, Pennsylvania to my brother's
driveway in Casper, Wyoming without needing to add so much as
a drop of fuel to the truck....

Though in practice I wouldn't actually do that... I'd refill
atleast one empty tank enroute as a reserve, because there's simply
no way I could make that trip without sleep (or piss breaks)

Also in practice it's going to be FAR easier to actually pull off a one-way
unrefueled trip on an eastbound run, and not for the more obvious reason
that the westbound trip is uphill for most of the difference... the REAL
problem is the prevailing wind....

Try crossing Nebraska driving into a headwind sometime...
