NAPA batteries

Interesting info on East Penn batteries, but I got the best battery NAPA had, and it was manufactured Dec the 1st of last year, so it is probably a Excide.

That is cool to know that East Penns are made HERE.

The previous battery was a mid range Autozone, it lasted five years and I put it thru hell(nearly competely discharged it once)

Strangely enough the Autozone had a spacer on the top, and my new NAPA battery did not require the spacer.

My experience is that the average battery will last about 3 - 5 years as a "general" rule. OEM batteries are pretty good - my OEM Motorcraft lasted 6 years, but a couple of the cells were getting weak, and I replaced it this winter.

Aftermarket batteries available are most usually made by a few major manufacturers that put on the "brand name" of whom they are made for, so quality control factors are pretty good. In cases of aftermarket stuff, you usually get what you pay for - the premium batteries are more expensive, but some of them are warrantied for 5, 6 or even more years.

Some of the "discount" priced batteries have guarantees/warranties that are quite "all inclusive" as well - the drawback here usually has to do with it crapping out and the inconvenience that involves (e.g. leaving you stalled; taking out a dead battery returning it back to where you bought it) even if the retailer replaces it free of charge.

And, as posted earlier, even the big retailers may have sourced out batteries from various manufacturers, so generalizations about a particular retailer's product doesn't always hold water.

walmart batteries are usually exide or Johnson control,look on the battery the next time you visit slug mart if you don't believe me.
it will also have a sticker that says made in Mexico.

some are JCI some are EXIDE.depends on where your at.
at one time EAST PENN made motorcraft for ford.

JCI also owns a big part of OPTIMA.

Optima red top. 6 years, no problems. I like this type battery because they do not gas and corrode everything around them.shady

Unfortunately, that's no longer the case

From all reports I see on forums, the new RedTops suck the big one

I have 2 that are 2 and 3 years old, both have been completely discharged, and sat outside in extreme cold - two things the redtops are supposed to be great for... Neither one will hold a charge worth a darn now. I think I'm switching to the Carquest batteries, if I get the chance

if you have an O'RILEYS near you you can pick up a DEKA AGM for around $140,900 to 1000 CCA.pound for pound same as yellow top OPTIMA

Yeah my leaky Motorcraft batteries (made by JCI) both lasted me all of one whopping year (not to mention immediately took all the paint off my battery trays too ).

That's interesting to know the Diehard Platinum is AGM (guess it's no wonder they're so spendy too). I don't seem to see a group size 27 deep cycle though
