Good Evening all, I have a 2002 Ranger XLT and there is a switch next to the radio on the upper left hand side. It has a very small red light built into it and can be pushed on or off. What does it do?

It turns on the "Check Engine Light" in someone else's truck. Please leave it alone. 
Seriously, If you bought the truck used, it probably goes to something that the previous owner installed. Pictures would help. But it doesn't sound like an OEM switch.

Is there anything custom or non OEM under the hood or maybe the guy before added lights somewhere. Pics aren't going to do much since we already know this wasn't a factory button. Best bet is to pull the dash bezel and follow the wires. If not, you will continue to get smart ass comments like "did you ask the switch what it was for" or my favorite "hold the phone next to it and we will listen to it" lol.

- If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
If it's a 4x4 it may have had a neutral tow kit installed so the transfer case can be shifted to neutral while being towed-behind a camper for example. I don't remember the procedure to engage neutral, hopefully the instructions are still there if that's what it is.
