My Uncle thinks his subaru outback would win in snow compared to my 2002 ford ranger fx4 off road.

What does therangerstation think

I justed texted my uncle a few minutes ago saying - My ranger would do better in snow than your outback i think and he replyied - Not without putting extra weight in the read end

Ground clearance.

Our Bronco has all the fancy lockers and snow modes and whatever... my 85 will thrash it in deep snow just because it is higher off the ground.

It is heavier than your truck on both axles but the bronco is heavier than my 85.

not out doing a suburu if the ranger has normal tires and suspension..

on my 42 or some 44 inch tires aired down to 2 psi i would challenge a suburu

as long as it is DEEEEEP.

My ranger would out do my uncles subaru though right because my compact truck has 31 inch tires and the fx4 off road suspension

year and model will be a factor.

. if its a demolition dummy contest....there is an advantage to the truck chassis.

driving, handling at speed on the road.....suburu.

fireroads. suburu.

mild trails. suburu

stout trails- ranger.

we are talking stock for stock. save for both machines equipped with the same type of snow tires.

if you are not afraid of putting the beans to a suburu..they will go places that are suprising.

That would make for a good video, I think!

The FX4 suspension is the same setup and design as the regular 4wd rangers.

Agreed. Don’t doubt a subie. Those things are tanks

@Gary DuBois
I trust both a well built Ranger or Bronco II in climate weather with my life but I had a 78 Subaru Brat that I could not get stuck in the snow, even skimming through snow over the hood deep!

In the end it is about how absolutely necessary it is that I drive in crap winter weather. If I absolutely must, I have to trust the rig with my life. In the words of our boy Clint Eastwood (as Dirty Harry) "a man's gotta know his limitations", which applies to the vehicle too.

I think that this is probably the best answer. Subarus are very capable 4wd/ AWD vehicles, and have a much more forgiving nature when in mild off road or lousy road conditions (note the common denominator is "road") the weight distribution on the subie is better, the overall handling is better. Also, driver skill makes a huge difference as well. a skilled driver can make the Ranger perform better than an unskilled driver in a subaru. Higher clearance in the Ranger will also play a factor in deeper snow as 85 mentioned.

Subaru guys tend to be just like jeep guys...

Unless we are talking running a twisty backroad in 3inches of snow...my money is on the ranger anyday of the week.

If yall do it wait untill its wet, heavy, and deep. That subaru wont have a chance.

This is assuming you both have comperable tires

Subaru is the car of colorado. They get a lot of snow in colorado.

Pickups notoriously have a disadvantage due to weight balance. My pickups do rather well in snow, especially deep snow. Aggressive tires help with that. But weight balance is a thing. I had a bone stock 89 Bronco II in college that was an absolute tank in the snow. The weight balance was right. I was busting through drifts that were taller than the hood with it with some half-bald 30” mud tires.

That Subie is going to have better weight balance than a pickup.

The Ranger, however, can haul a lot more than the Subie. It’s also going to handle real off-road better than the Subie.

They aren’t bad cars at all, they are pretty effective. I have zero plans of owning a Subaru though because they just don’t do what I need a vehicle to do. Fixing up my 88 Bronco II got pushed way down on the list of things for me to do. I have probably 85-90% of the parts needed to put it together and have had most of those parts for over 5 years now. I NEED a truck. So keeping a truck or two on the road at any given time is priority #1 for me. A car or SUV would be nice once in awhile for general running around or if I need more than two seats but it’s kind of difficult to put 20 foot lengths of steel or a pile of 2x4’s and plywood or a ton and a half of gravel or the like in a car or SUV. I own trucks because I need a truck and I deal with the limitations. I could care less if someone thinks their vehicle is better, most of those people don’t do what I do so the argument is invalid on its face. Apples and oranges.
