My Ranger is a peice of s...!

Can't just tap the key lightly and have it fire off?

That works the first time, but then the crappy carb rears it ugly head and puts a end to that. On a cold day it could take 2-3 starts to get out of the driveway, but it always cracks right off to go again.

If the engine wasn't on its last legs I would stick a different carb on it, but I don't want to drop the coin on a engine that I plan on pulling in the next year or two and junking, I would rather put that $200-300 into the replacement 289.

Well aparently his Motorcraft starter didn't last either or it would still be on the truck...

I think I got my rebuilt one at Carquest, it has probably been 7 or 8 years ago, it still works fine (and gets a terrible workout trying to coax the engine to life)

Lasted 17 years:D! I don't know that for sure obviously, I just figured a 1990 truck, replaced 4 starters in 2 years maybe first one lasted 17?:D Heck for all I know, it could have been replaced when it was 6 months old. I've bought remanufactured parts before and not had problems, its just that as long as I've had my '96 I've replaced nothing but oil, belts, hoses. All else is original. I figure buying motorcraft would basically be buying the same as what came with my truck IMO. But you are right it did go bad!

All good info, but what mine keeps doing is, when I start it, it stays engaged. The starters always test out fine, but the bendix keeps failing. I even changed the flywheel thinking it had a problem. Oh Wooooooo is me, what to do! :fie::fie::fie:

Mine did that too...turned out the relay on the side by the battery was cracked and leaking electricity all over the place...I had to glue it and fill it back up with new electricity...

Seriously though...the relays crack and they can act like a screwdriver between the two posts...

+1, I have had to replace the relay on the passenger side fender because the starter would keep going, stall the engine as it is trying to get started and then keep on cranking.

I forgot to mention I have replaced that a couple of times also with no results.

O' Reilly's has a lifetime warrentee on their starters, just gotta keep the receipt.

Has anyone else noticed that the receipts ink fades over time? IMO I got some receipts in the glove box and they are faded beyond legible.

Also fabman_52, can you tell us how many teeth are on the Bendix? Can you show us a picture of the starter teeth?

I really think this might be a clearence issue. Can you describe the wear on your bendix gear?

Has your starter vibrated loose?

That's a problem with virtually every receipt in existence. Thermal paper fades over time, especially when it's kept in a wallet or similar environment.

I had to deal with the same thing, gone through maybe 5 starters in 4 years. All through Advanced. They have the lifetime warranty but you have to crawl up under there to change it out everytime.

The last time I had to swap everything to figure it out. New ground wires, solenoid, and hot from the battery. Turned out to be my hot from the solenoid to the starter. It was old and part of the cable was hitting the side of my oil pan.
