My only truck has an intermittent timing problem. 2.3 liter, 1993, 2 wheel drive, 5sp

Check your crank sensor again, and most likely just replace it. Check it's wiring harness, because if that is faulty or has breaks in the shielding, you will have problems. Ever get a strange tick/click/pop in the speakers? That's the crank sensor shielding. Check wiring diagrams for the radio interference junk, which is what I just described. Rebuilding that harness is pretty easy, but takes time and attention to detail. It'll cost minimally versus the cost of a new harness (which FORD does not make/carry anymore, and is $$$ from the JY). The CPS itself should only be like $20

Do a simple compression test on ALL cylinders. Bite the bullet and reach in there and get the spark plugs out. I had one of these motors, and yes it is a PITA to get them all out.

check fuel pressure

when stumbling (my guess is fuel pump is going bad (seems to be common problem with ranger fuel pumps) they get hot and fuel pressure drops

just my 2 cents
