my graduation present

Congrats. Nice truck.

Pete

hey thanks guys, Im hoping to add a build thread on here when i start working on it. it might even be a 400m which would be even cooler, and as the vin tag, i know all that good stuff cept the bodies off a f150 and the frames a 3/4 ton so its titled as a 1/2 ton instead but a real 3/4 ton. cant wait to get it going!

Yep, first thing I noticed also were the blocks on the front. Loose em fast as you can before hitting the road. I would avoid to tall of shackles on the front also as it will make it a squirel beast going down the road. You got some sping arching to do lucy!

Nice present! I had a 78 in the late 80's and loved that truck with a passion, but I will warn you, modified it was a hard truck to stop off road, but it was also scary to stop it in an emergency quick stop in traffic! UPGRADE THE BRAKES! It'll be money well spent!

Sweet truck! I love those trucks. What do you have to do to get it running?

My dad has a 1972 F250 Ranger with a 351 and a 4spd and the thing howled on the highway it was geared so low.... would go thru damn near anything - and did - but it just wasn't economical for a daily driver. I don't recall what gearing it had.

Almost all 3/4 ton & 1 ton trucks were 4.10 geared ,cab chassis versions usually got 4.56 or 5.13 gearing. However the 4.10s usually only got 8-10 mpg & thats mostly due to the small tire diameter that Ford was using. I believe that they were about 28-29" & any of those years could easily run 33s which would make you fuel economy go up to around 12-14 depending on your right foot.

I have a 76 F250 thats been down for several years due to massive hp & torque tearing up Dana 60 rear ends with 35s on them. Yet with the 520 stroker engine & manual 4 spd with 4.10 gears I was able to get 14mpg from it & 10 pulling a 26ft travel trailer.

I believe that 75 was the first yrs of disc brakes on the 3/4 ton & theres also 3-4 different front axles used in the 3/4 ton trucks there all D44s but have different weight capacities to them.

3/4 ton 4wd ONLY have a 32" wide frame rails for the rear section wear as the 1/2 ton & 1 ton 2wd & 4wd & 3/4ton 2wd all have a 36" wide frame rails,at least from 67-76 not sure about 77-79 years.

77 1/2 has a high pinion disc brake front end which is a better up grade & then trie to locate a superduty sterling or Dana80 rear disc brake rear end.

personally I would opt to locate a dana60 front end from a 1 ton 4wd as I have even broke D44 front end parts ,but again this is all due to 600+ hp & 600+ Ft lbs of torque at the wheels

yea, I found out a few things out today. it has a 400M in it, which is beast, 4.10 gears, which is also awesome because i plan on putting either 37"s or maybe 39"s if i can get a good enough deal. it has a dana 44 with dual piston calipers, and massive rear drums. we got it running today which im so happy about, all i should need is maybe a carb cleaning and a accelorator(?) pump and it should be good! I plan on ditching the blocks in the back FOR SURE because theres about 7 inchs of blocks in the back, im going to ditch the new blocks and keep the orginal, duh, maybe flip the rear leaf mounts so it should be close to with the blocks, and in the front, there maybe only 2 - 2 1/2 inch blocks which i dont think is that bad, i know there not the safest thing to have but i will maybe drive it 20 miles a week? and i will definatly put new u bolts on front and back! and guess what!! pictures!

Thats a 4 foot step ladder

well, im about to go make a build thread, so ill add a link on this thread so you guys can find it

im jealous as hell. i got a 79 bronco (same as the fseries trucks from the doors forward) and these trucks are bad ass, the interior in them is the best interior ever put in a truck, just love it.
and how did you find out if its a 400? the only way to tell from a 351m and 400 is to dig into the engine

nope...never torn into the motor. I lucked out, on the valve cover it says its a 400 6.6L and it looks orginal and all the other stickers are there so im guess its the orginal valve cover. sad part is it has a 2bbl carb.

Neat 70's ride, Bro!!!!

Damn you southern bastards and your rust free trucks

(congrats btw! Very nice!)

Hey I'm sorry to say it again. But loose the blocks on the front, that should be you first priority. It's not safe, and don't try to rationalize keeping them, they need to go. Yes it will have a rake to it with the front lower, but you owe it to be safe for other drivers on the road. :icon_thumby:

great present!!!!!

I really liked my 1955 Ford/V-8/half-ton when I graduated!!!!!
