my FRIEND can go 0-30 in a split second

My friend drives a 99 2wd 4.0L ranger and his speedometers isn't working right.
When he starts from a stop it reads 0mph until he gets to 30 miles per hour where it jumps to 30 and works fine after that.
I dont know whats going on, maybe a clutch slipping or something, but help would be appreciated.

no clutches, the speedo is entirely electronic.

most likely a bad vehicle speed sensor.

Has he done any modding to his gauges, when i modded my guages i know i put the needle back on too tight and it would do that jumping thing, until i pulled the needle back off just a little.

He didn't do anything but the previous owner installed a tach on it, but he has had the truck for months before this happend

it was a sensor on the rear axel
