My 1st Ranger: "Free" 1990 XLT 2.9 4WD Auto Single Cab

Cali emissions 2.9 is a strange animal. You will have MAF, which is different and somewhat superior to MAP.

You're inheriting a very good truck to work with for whatever you dream up. I wouldn't change the engine.
:iamwithstupid:

Also, early EGR was not the greatest. For Federal emissions the EGR came on 86/87 2.9 and then was dropped to the end of 2.9 production. The interesting thing was the EGR equipped 2.9 had a much larger throttle body than the non-EGR. Also on 86/87 vehicles with Federal emissions you could delete the EGR and run an 88 computer legally because according to emissions it’s classified as an “upgrade” to a more modern emissions. I’m not sure if there’s any way to do something similar to a California emissions.

Be careful saying that. Some people might get the wrong idea about you. ( I'm also in Florida )
Florida is definitely a "special" place. I can't deal with a lot of the culture here and definitely not the horrible heat and humidity. I'll be a very part time snowbird soon. 8-9 months in Michigan and 3-4 in Florida.

I won't have to deal with emissions, so it'll be removed and plugged. Back in the day we used to make a thin metal plate to fit between the EGR valve and the intake manifold. The early smog tests didn't usually mess with the EGR valve. I'd go to the more expensive no pass no pay shops and if they function tested it they'd usually say it's plugged passages and I'd say I'll clean it out. Wink and a nod.

Ive eliminated the EGR on my ranger and B2 by doing the 88 ECM. I just left the EGR valve on.

It also eliminates the knock sensor

I'm missin' the Mitten! I'm trying like Hell to move back to Michigan. I live in SC and with a few exceptions - @Curious Hound 🫡 and a handful of other folks - this state can go 🦆 itself. I know that means my Ranger is going to be a summer-only vehicle, but that's fine with me! I'll buy a Maverick for the 4 months the state goes to 💩. My wife is going to have to do that herself.

So what part of MI? I'm from Ferndale.

I've lived very briefly in Troy, Rochester Hills & Warren. I bought a project house in Detroit, so I'll be living there.

Later on I'm going to look for something up in the Gaylord/Grayling area. I don't think I'd want to deal with living way in the UP.

Assuming the EGR valve was always under the throttle body, not all CA compliant 2.9L had EGR. It may have been dropped for those in '88 too. I have an '89 that was built in May and sold in December (in CA) that has no EGR and uses MAP.

I dont think any 2.9 had EGR after 87...and 90 was first year for MAF in call
