Mustang D-shaft Flange?

Hey ive got a 87 ranger and im swapping a 8.8 axle underneath it. i remember seeing somewhere on here that im able to use a mustang flange with the smaller u-joints as the 87 ranger does. Any one know what yr of mustang? or any other info? kinda having a hard time finding one around here....thanks in advance

5.0 mustangs with 8.8s.. so 86-93 for sure, not sure about 94+. And the u-joints weren't smaller, it uses the smaller 2.5" bolt pattern that the 7.5 used.

wow im confused now. how come a mustang flange will bolt up to an 8.8, but my 87 ranger one wont work then?

if it uses the same patteren then my current driveshaft should bolt up then will it not??

Because 7.5 and 8.8 pinion flanges don't interchange...

Fox mustangs originally had 7.5 rears. Ford decided making a small 8.8 flange was cheaper than changing the drive shaft flange yoke apparently...

So the flange has to come off the Mustang pinion, in which, one would have to replace their 8.8 pinion flange with the Mustang one. So the new Mustang pinion flange will bolt up to ones smaller 2.5 drive shaft flange.

And a new crush sleeve would have to be used to set up the pinion back to specs.

New drive shaft, or pinion set up? Fixing to do an axle swap for a buddy, and sorting things out.

I would go the other way and replace the drive shaft. Those tiny u-joints aren't very tough.

wow im smart like dirt lol....i get it now.

i ended up getting a 92 exploder drive shaft and im just gonna have the end piece put onto my existing drive shaft., only shitty thing is the small u-joint at the 2pc part after the center bearing.

You need to get rid of the carrier bearing and use a one peice d-shaft. The newer supercabs had one piece, gen IIIs I believe.

I thought they were talking about changing the flange on the driveshaft that actually bolts onto the pinion flange (P Flange in link) on the differential? If you get that you can still use the stock u-joints and driveshaft without opening up the differential. Is it the actual pinion flange itself actually that is in question? My stock u-joints are still tight, and I am planning changes to the rest of the drivetrain that may warrent a different shaft anyway. I would hate to get a custom one built now and have it not work in 2 years if/when I get my 289 and might actually need the bigger joints.

yeah, im gonna go to a one piece, but im getting dual t-cases so im just gonna wait till then

Has anyone had this done to their stock shaft? If so about how much did it run and how did you like the results? I think it would be cheaper than a whole custom unit, and should work just fine.

You know, I ran the stock 1210 shaft for a year with my V8 and I beat on the thing... I never broke a joint but I did spread the ears in the yoke for the flange a bit...
