Mustang 8.8s... same gears?

If I find used gears for a Mustang 8.8 would they work on a 8.8 31 spline from an Explorer? Just looking for some cheep used 5.13s and thought some drag racers might have them. Anything I should look for with used gears?

well, i would imagin they would work. The problem with used gears is that when they break in, they get a specific wear pattern, when re installing them, you dont set them up to spec, you need to set them to match the pattern. If not, you will increase wear, operating temp and in some cases have to put up with a loud gearset. Im cheep as hell, and i cant cinvince myself to buy used gears.

I've had pretty good luck with used gears. You want to look at the sides of the teeth, They should be smooth and uniform. There should be no sharp edges. If you run your finger over the flats of the gear and it cuts you, it is junk. also look for rust pits. Don't pay over $75 for used gears. As far as I know all 8.8 gears are the same, I know for sure that all the common ones are.

An 8.8 is the same across the board gear wise. According to ford there are some differences in the limited slip, aside from the 28 and 31 spline difference. As stated above you need to set the pattern to match the one alreay worn into the gearset. I personally don't care to buy used gears the only exception is if I know the person who used them so I know what they have been through.
