Mushy steering - Adjust the bolt on the box?

I have a 94 2.3 Ranger. Over the past few years, the steering has become mushy - for lack of a better word. I haven't gotten under the truck to check for linkage issues yet, so I don't know if my problem could easily be something like worn tie rod ends.

I have been told, however, that I might want to start the investigation by adjusting the bolt on the top of the steering gear box... loosening the jam nut and tightening the bolt.

My questions here:
1) What does this adjustment actually do?
2) Is that a likely source of the mushiness?
3) Would adjusting risk damaging anything or creating any leaks?
4) How much to adjust it? 1/4 turn? 1 turn or more?

I don't know the settings, because I've never adjusted that bolt. If it is done wrong, you get to buy another gearbox (which is why I never did it).

First check all the linkage, replace what is bad and grease what you can. Check the hoses. Soft or mushy hoses cause issues like that.

"Mushy" doesn't really describe the symptom of a loose steering box.

I would be looking at the linkages, balljoints and maybe the wheel bearings too if it seems mushy or vague in response. Check for things that may be binding or rubbing. Also check your tire pressures.

I'd actually check your shocks. Mine had a spongy feel to it before I replaced them, settled it right down.

My dad has since bought new tires for it (which I technically thank him) that were very much the wrong size, and a little bit to wide for the rims I had (in my opinion). It's back to feeling pretty mushy.

Doing my ball joints straightened my truck up alot too.

the adjustment bolt on the box should be a last resort.

AFTER you've verified that the problem doesn't lie elsewhere.
