I plow with my 1990 ranger on 33s with 4.56s and D28/7.5 combo. Everytime i get on it semi-hard i blow my drivers side front shaft. I have broken 4 of them in the last 4 months, which is when i did the gear swap. So now i have more torque going to that wheel and it obviously just cant handle it. Does anyone know of a fix for this?? I tack welded the Ujoint caps on the last 2 shafts. I have tried many different kinds of u-joints too

Therefore i am interested in a Fix or a Dana 35 TTB. I live in Northeast Ohio if anyone has a axle that i could buy off of them close. i have seen a few in the classifides section but i never get PMs back. 4.56 gear would be nice but if not i can regear it. Thanks for any help

Yes, the fix is to run something bigger than a D28. Pick one.

The Dana 35 is a bolt in swap. The 28 just cant handle the abuse....

so that what it looks like when u blow one up lol

are you welding the u joints into the shafts? i did this to my b2 tough truck an beat the ever living crap out of it an it worked well for quite some time.

+2 for d35. nice explosion, bet ya could change one of them shafts in the dark with your eyes closed now. lol

Had the same problems. I did the D35/8.8 swap. Problem solved. The D35 swap is easy as can be and the frustration of broken axles isn't worth keeping the 28. It's also a great piece of mind knowing there is something a little stronger up front.

That sucks, man. I have a set of spare shafts in my toolbox in case that happens, but so far so good. For some reason I just keep breaking the expensive pieces and my shafts are holding up really well though.

thanks for all the input!

and yeah, welding the caps in lasted a lot longer. but as soon as most of the weight is on my left front... boom. i have sourced a few d35s in local junk yards. i need the axle (tt beams, pig...), radius arms and steering correct? i am running the superlift steering system. hopefully i can continue using it. my shafts never broke until i got the 4.56s.

yeah, i can change a shaft on the trail, tire off to tire on in 22 minutes. :D not something to be proud of lol

all you need for the 35 swap is the beams, shafts everything from the knuckles out and pig.. its a direct bolt in.. i found it a lot easier to just disconnect old radius arms an the ttb beams an drop the hole assembly like that and install the new 35.. the steering is going to have to extend out i think 3/4 of an inch if iam not mistakened? the 35 is a TAD wider than a 28. all you have to do is loosen up the tie rod sleeve an everything bolts right up. you can even use the 28 calipers. they are the same.

I believe it is 3/4 of an inch per side wider. It should be possible to use the d28 steering BUT the likely hood of violently removing the tie rod end goes up greatly when you take away 3/4 of an inch of threads from each sleeve.

Thanks. 86ford helped me get a d35 out of a 93 explorer today.
thanks for all the input.
anyone need a d28 with a 4.56 gear? haha

if all the experts here say swap it....thats a no brainer...cool truck though
