Mpg mods?

E fan will help,Lucas oil additive,high flow air filter, and Lucas carb fuel inj cleaner....on a 4 cyl it won't make a huge difference but things add up. I checked my mpg a couple weeks ago on my 2.9 and I'm getting 22+ MPG avg with 172,000 mi on it. All I've done is high flow air filter (cone),Lucas in the oil and fuel and a glass pack muffler...besides keeping it tuned up. My truck is listed as getting 23 mpg highway new.

I've found the Lucas only helps if the engine already has some pretty substantial issues. I used it in my Ranger for years to the tune of an extra 2 mpg, quieter running, and no smoke. Then I put a new engine in it and see no difference now that I have stopped using it.

Also....Restore works well when the motor has a lot of miles. Money has been tight but I use it when I can afford it,on my engine it increased vacume by 2 inches.

That guy's truck is pretty amazing if his MPG estimate is true. Amazing what aerodynamics can do, it show's whats really the main culprit of piss poor gas mileage LMAO!

Yea 43 mpg sounds great but it's no longer a truck...so why not just buy a car that already had good mpgs? I think mid 20s is pretty good considering all factors involved. Probably the only thing that well make a big enough impact would be a new more efficient engine, or forced induction. Most other stuff just doesn't net enough gain to be with it you might get 2 or 2 mpgs more, probably better to just tune it up, and stay on top of most things coupled with smarter driving.

I mean say you go x number of mods at whatever cost, how long before they actually pay for themselves and really start saving you money? Even a turbo or new engine your looking at a decent chunk of change and effort that won't net savings for years. Cool bragging rights though. Unless your engine is shot and you need a new one anyways then maybe.

personally I've love to get a diesel engine then dabble in making my own fuel, then when the zombie apocalypse comes I'm not up $hit creek with no fuel lol. Or you know gas runs out or just gets too expensive...

Hey I've been reading you alls thread here. I recently acquired a 1990 Ford Ranger XLT std. Cab, 2wd, 5spd. With the long bed. Took it on a 573 mile trip without a single hiccup. I averaged 26 mpg. Only thing I did to it was oil change, tune up weird thing had 8 plugs. My other truck a '99 Dodge Ram 2500. V10. Gets 8.5 mpg city. Why would anyone mess with Fords little runabout? I'm tickled without a feather. I'm in agreement with getting rid of the side saddle weight of another passenger if you want better mpg. With the Dodge it cost me nearly $600 a month to get to work and back. My little 'ol 29 year old Ranger is going to save me a ton of money. It has 111,000 miles. No ticking sounds No leaks and No rust. I'm very happy with my $550 purchase. But, I do have a question. Will the bucket seats of a 2003 ford escort bolt into the truck? The bench seat needs lots of help. And the escorts buckets are super nice.

When gas prices spiked in 09 I still had my 04 Ranger 4x4, 4.0 sohc, 5 speed with 4.10 gears. I tried using Mobil 1 instead of Motorcraft 5w30 synthetic blend and it increased the mileage by 5%. I figured out that as long as gas was at least $2.80 the improvement paid for the extra oil cost. I'd also shift into 5th at 45mph unless I was going up a hill. Tall, skinny tires that are properly inflated will help, too.

It's a little extreme but one of my customers managed to improve the gas mileage on his V10 camper by close to 20%. He removed the generator from the storage spot on the side of the camper and installed a hydrogen generator he's built in it's place, He ran a length of hose from the unit to the throttle body and had a solenoid inline to shut off the flow. He'd wait until he was on the highway and open the solenoid so hydrogen would feed into the air intake, the O2's saw the mixture getting rich and leaned out the injectors. I'm not sure what the insurance company would have said if he'd had an accident with the homemade unit producing an explosive gas.

Have a look in the Spotters thread. There's a video posted there, touring a camper first gen Ranger. The seats in it are the same as the seats from an Aerostar. I think 84-97 passenger vans all used the same front seats. They're quite comfy, a high back bucket with a fold down arm rest attached to the inboard side of the seat, a glove box under the passenger seat, optional power, and optional power lumbar. Oh, and they recline. I put a couple thousand miles on those Aerostar seats, summer of '16.

Another set of comfy Ford seats can be found in a 50/50 split bench (with arm rests in the middle) in a Taurus, found from about 1988-1995. Those I've put tens of thousands of miles on (I wonder if they'd fit a Ranger?). The third generation Taurus seats (40/20/40?) with a flip/fold center console (also in the fourth generation) are also comfy, if they'd fit.

I seem to recall reading here that ANY Ford seat will fit in a Ranger, if you swap the track to the Ranger track. Your mileage (and comfort) may vary.

23-24 mpg with the Lima 2.3 is about what you can expect and there isn't much you can do to improve your mileage beyond regular maintenance, and man of the posters in this thread have mentioned all of them except checking the operating temperature. If your thermostat is opening too soon the engine will run cooler than it should and that could potentially cause a slightly rich mixture. It's easy enough to verify if the engine is reaching normal operating temperature and thermostats are easy to replace. Just make sure you get the correct temperature as some of the aftermarket thermostats open sooner than they should. If in doubt replace it with a Motorcraft thermostat.
