I'm new...co-worker had me join to see if I could get some help with my stock ranger...it died and Im trying to find another engine for it. Any help would be apreciated. Im not looking to go rock crawling or mudding just to work and back and to see family on the other side of the mountains.

I own an 88 Ranger XLT and I "had" a 2.9L in it till I decided to repalce all the gaskets because of an oil leak...thats when my neighbor found that FORD "forgot" to put in the full thrustbearing and now its shot! I have the opportunity to put a 4.0L from a 94(co-workers) Ranger and was wondering if its possible and how much of a pain it would be to put in. Mine is a 5 speed the 94 is an automatic. PLEASE ADVISE

I am lost without my truck

I don't really understand...

What did Ford forget? What thrust bearing?

What exactly is your engine doing? Maybe we can help you fix it! Hopefully it's not actually dead.

Frankly, If you need it quick, put another 2.9 in. Keep it cool and it'll last you!

A 4.0 will kill your trans in short order. You would HAVE to get the proper flywheel and clutch as well since the 4.0 will toast the smaller 2.9 clutch almost instantly. The starter will need replaced as well since the 4.0 manual starter is different.

There will be some wiring issues as well, but that is easily overcome.

If you can get your mits on the whole donor vehicle you can take the engine, trans, and all the wiring and that will make it easier.
