I'm looking to buy a 1990 ex-cab with 2.9 5-sp.I know I want an automatic. I would go with a 3.0 or 2.3. A 5.0 would be great. If I don't buy this on I'll buy another.I want an older Ranger starting with just a good cab and frame. If this truck is wrong is it the tranny or the engine.Or should I buy an older one to do a swap.To many questions or what-if Thanks for any and all help Ken N.

:icon_confused: this confuses me looking for a 2.9 5 speed. i want an automatic. :icon_confused:

I'm sorry this is a truck i'm thinking about buying.I'm hesitant because it is a 5-sp.And I want an automatic. The price is right.I want to do a rebuild. Thanks Ken N.

Keep the 5-speed. The early Ranger autos were junk.

i agree eleventy billion % the 5 speed is more reliable than the a4ld. also it would be better to go with a 4.0 or 5.0 swap if you are swapping for more power or go with a 2.3 turbo for the cool factor.

I'm concerned about the 4.0. My son has a 99 with 4.0 auto more trouble than it is wort.Spent more money on this motor and the gas milage SUCKS. Or is the problem the 4x4.I have never needed a 4x4 and won't own one!So are all 4.0 the same.So mpg for 4.0 and 3.0 automatic is what. Thanks for all comments.

I've been surfing here and have decieded not to buy this truck.I going to familiarize myself with the options better.Maybe a first gen ranger. It's a toy and I like carborators.I still got questions.I've had Fords for 35 plus years. As always Thanks Ken N.
