Mot & moe

not sure what would fit, but i just pulled the egr stuff off my 1983 2.8 engine. the pump, canister, etc. is there, might be a couple smaller things missing. if you could get it to fit, or mock it up so it looks like it's the right stuff, it's yours for the shipping.

I hope you have some good luck fixing the problem.
Sorry for the upcoming thread jack:
I think that the world does need to start looking at vehicles to get the real polluters off the road, but that should be able to be accomplished by a road side sniffer. It's what comes out the tail pipe that counts, not whether all the factory stuff is hooked up. I've not seen any numbers, but I wonder what it costs in pollution to make a new vehicle, compared to keeping an old one running on the road? In other words, how long can I run my old vehicle before I surpass the amount of pollution it takes to build a new vehicle? I have a feeling that it would be many years of driving my old piece before breaking even. I wish we had real numbers!
Some food for thought...

I've never had any mot inspections done..... Even driving around with no bed and front bumper for 2 months. Oh and my exhaust is pretty loud too :icon_confused:

It's one of those things that if you take a different route on the day they hold the inspection you wouldn't know it...I managed to find them twice...lol

my '88 2.3 had egr. mine was efi though. dont recall it having a air pump.

Probably did...I've seen mustangs with the same setup...in fact, that's where I got mine...and my 89 Tempo had one...I think...

doesnt seem like it would be legal to just pull anyone over then poke around under the hood, its one thing to point out a bulb out or a missing mirror but to look for all the original factory parts under the hood? and if you had swapped out engines. think how funny it would be to have someone staring at a carbed 302 where a 2.0 four once was. i 'spose canada has different rules, this is the first time ive heard being in canada is a bad deal. (well their fuel costs too) i do try to make my "modifications" still appear as stock equipment, granted the right equipment would narc me out, but id pass on a visual look-over.

Yeah, I had the parts to fix mine properly but either tossed or lost them...can't remember now because it was 2 years ago...but they are perfectly entitled to pull over any vehicle and check them...and pull them off the road if they don't like what they see...so I was fortunate that I was only missing a few parts...I know a guy that gets pulled over frequently and they've given him fines for a number of things...

Thanks, but I think the bracket is the most important part...they are hard to find...they have three points that bolt on the upper exhaust side of the 2.3...if you had one of those I'd be interested...the pump I can get by without for now...I just have to fix the EGR before the court date...which hasn't been set because I have to go appear next week...

I hope you have some good luck fixing the problem.

I don't really have a problem with getting the polluters off the road...but a study that I did years ago indicated that as hard as we try to fix things in North America, there are nearly a billion vehicles in the world (extrapolation from half a billion ten years ago) and about 80% of them are not in North America and are not affected whatsoever by these regulations. Add things like Chernobyl, Japan nuke disaster, and a few million industries in third world countries that are belching out mega tons of pollution and you get something like a 5% overall reduction in toxins...if there is no growth in other areas to overwhelm that small gain...

That's been the sand in my undies about the whole drive clean program all along...but that doesn't mean I don't believe "we gotta start somewhere" either...I've just never liked the costs involved to the little guy...

Take the belchers off the road for sure...and find some leniency in the repair cost limit...

Whatever happened with the outcome in court with the Hollaback twins ? Was the Judge friendly ??

Thanks for asking...I actually went to court initially in August and they remanded it till November because I could not find the parts. It was then that I started the wild goose chase looking for an air pump from a 2000 Impala (they do not actually have the air pump in Canada on that vehicle) because someone in a parts department said that was the vehicle to look for.

It took me almost the full three months to find the air pump and when I went back to court they just dropped the charges.

I made a tech bulletin about it...the hardest part was finding the air pump...it came from a 2004 Cavalier...and they do have them in Canada...

No, this isn't a story about badly named twins...

I was hauling a load of metal to the yard today and got pulled over by an unmarked cruiser (well, actually, there was an Officer inside). He looked at my load and said "Is that metal for scrap" and I replied in the affirmative.

He then told me they were doing spot checks and to follow him. As I was following him to the arena parking lot about a mile away I was thinking of how I was going to get home if they found something wrong because my CAA membership just expired and I won't renew it till next week. But, then again, they'd probably impound the truck so I'd only have to hitchhike about ten k's and maybe walk a few k's in the freezing wet weather. Wonderful, knot~

Anyway, we get there and one guy is doing the visual inspection from the MOT and, to my surprise, he comes up with just a burnt out signal lamp and headlamp. I found the head lamp plug had fallen off so I fixed one of them right there. He was being pretty thorough and another inspector beside him says "I'm a big Ranger fan"...I was too nervous to carry that any further, but he might even be a member on here...but, all told, they were pretty decent about the whole thing.

Then the MOE guy wants to look at the engine for emission controls, or lack thereof. Dang~. No EGR tube (still looking I told him) and no air pump (can't be found in Canada so far). He then gives me a long explanation of how things work and then proceeds to write me a ticket for the missing components. $365...ouch. I wasn't about to go into a spiel about having no job and barely being able to get the drive clean, license plates, renew my DL and do everything else on what I was getting paid to do nothing, and I'm glad I was able to keep my yap shut.

The MOE guy was nice as well, and told me that I should fix the EGR tube and fight the ticket and he would see about reducing it to $0 if I follow up on his recommendations. Just a matter of going to court in six months time. Heck, I could win a lottery and be on an island somewhere by that time.

It wasn't a total writeoff though...I made $25 on the load, so I only came up a -$340 for today's efforts...:bawling:

Why are we updating an old post??

:yahoo: That is certainly good news !! Glad it worked out w/ donor air pump-

Yes, thanks...it was great to have them drop the charges...I think the parts they wanted only cost me about $100 including the pump...but to buy new or to have them fabricated for me would have cost upwards of $400...the new pump alone is $150 to $300 depending on where you shop...

I had to put it on a toggle though because it sucks so much battery power...and makes noise like a turbo...hmmmm...great ricer idea...lol
