The masses don’t know the difference between 4.70 and 3.45 gears... They don’t care either. What they do know is it accelerates faster during the test drive.
Acceleration during test drive might "sell" it; but booming along at high rpms on Interstate isn't going to make people happy with it long term.

IMHO, 4.46s are too high for daily driver; but then I'm out to replace an '02 Explorer Sport with 3.73s.

No it doesn’t. That sounds like it should be right where I’d want to be... that may even be pretty good for a factory 2” lift and 37s. ;)

Some manufacturers anyways, when subaru legacys and outbacks shared a platform the outbacks were higher and had bigger tires, they usually had 4.44s while the smaller tire legacys would have 4.11s. Same with the Impreza's compared to the foresters. Same chassis, but the one with bigger tires (forester) would have 4.11s and the Impreza's would have 3.92s or something.

Oh they’ll care when they what the gas mileage is. Look at how people complain now when it comes to Rangers with 4.10:1 gears. For some reason, they expect a truck with that gearing and a V-6 to get car gas mileage.

It's the same architecture... I'm thinking the Bronco is showing us what is coming for the Ranger in many ways. It does make wonder if the next Gen Ranger might better suit my overall needs.

My plan A is to buy a Bronco and keep my current Ranger... because I simply can't imagine day to day life without a pick up truck in the driveway.

Plan B is to see what Ford has up their sleeve on the yet to been seen Ranger.

I wonder if I can convince the wife that I NEED two new trucks?
When is the new ranger gonna be pushed out? I have no interest in the 19-20 models.

I believe the Japanese Domestic Market Subaru Imprezas got the 4.44 lsd while here in the US market we got 4.11 lsd.
 
I believe it's 2023 for the next gen ranger. However... covid has changed many things.

I had an 1991 Isuzu Trooper with the boat anchor 2.8 V6 and 4:55 gears. 120 kms/hr was pushing it. Deep gearing for an anemic engine keep up with traffic.

I imagine the 2.3 Ecoboost would be overwhelmed by the weight and aerodynamics of a barn. Deep gearing to keep it going. Turbo life?

I haven’t compared the weight of the Bronco to the current Ranger but I imagine the weight is similar. The 2.3 hasn’t been disappointing with the 3.73 gears. I imagine the Bronco with the available gearing will be even better. The bigger available tires might make the additional gear options a necessity.
 
One thing I did notice was the independent M190 front axle with available locker.

The front axle on the current Ranger is a M190, is it not? If so, there may be some axle swaps in the future for Ranger owners. This is assuming the ring gear is welded to the carrier like it is on the Rangers. I imagine it would be like an Explorer axle swap where some welding would be involved.
