hey guys i got an 89 4x4 with a 5spd manual manual transfercase 2.3 i believe this is the mitsu tranmission it is original to the truck i do not have an owners manual can someone tell me what type tranny fluid she takes?

The mitsu has a pan on the bottom, like an automatic, Mazda don't

FM146 = 80-90w
M5OD = ATF

the basic rule is if your MANUAL transmission has any kind of
bolted-on bottom cover it takes gear oil.

75w-90 is recommended for the three mitsubishi transmissions
However thinner oil (65w-80) is recommended for the '85-87
Toyo Koygo transmissions (the 40-tooth synchro models tend to "float"
the synchros on the thicker oil thus leading to shift quality issues that
are reduced by using thinner oil)

I consider this to be arcane trivia as the last of the T-K transmissions
left the factory twenty years ago and soon all of them will be safely dead.

Transfer takes Mercon ATF. Just in case you decide to change it while your under there.

Just curious but what would happen if you used manual trans fluid in a manual trans that needs atf? Or what if you used gear oil in a manual that needs atf? Just curious what kind of problems could occur.

Poor lubrication, and all that goes with it.

Gears like oil films. Don't make one, and they will score/pit/whatever.

For the case of the M5OD, the blocking rings don't like gear oil.

If you take a close look at transmission guts, you'll find lots of very carefully placed oil passages, that depend upon lubricant moving in just the right way to distribute lubricant over the part and neighboring parts appropriately. Change the viscosity, and you will change that.
