Missouri Legal V8

Does anyone know if it is legal to have a V8 in a ranger in Missouri or what you need for one to be legal there? I have a 1990 and am moving from Wisconsin where we do not have vehicle inspections. Any help with that or help finding the info would be great.

Not positive on your states specific law, but someone a while back did a lot of research into this.
Basically, it's legal if its same year or newer setup that was offered in a vehicle of the same 'class'(read: not model).
Therefore, it's legal if you use a setup similar to one in a newer light truck/suv...
EFI obviously, with EGR et al.
Either way, without inspection I doubt anyone will hound you.
I built a firebreathing carbed v8 in my 88 ranger and never had legal trouble(with that, at least )
Then again, in kentucky, you could probably rig your truck up to shoot shotgun shells in the air and play the dixie tune when you push the horn and nobody would pay much attention.

He is going from an area without inspections (WI) to an area with them (MO)

I think the Missouri inpections are more of a safety thing than emissions, that is about all I know about them.

What area in missouri you moving to?

I used to live in the Kansas City, MO metro area. Around there it all depends on where you go. "Most" mechanic's shops will be MODOT Certified for inspections and what not, so your choices will be pretty vast. If you get your truck inspected at a shop thats located in a "hub" area...such as Liberty/Gladstone/KC/Parkview...the motor will have to come out of vehicle of the same or newer model years, and it must have all the original emissions equipment (I.E. if your truck was originally equipped with EGR, it must retain a functioning EGR system even with the new motor.)

Its a slightly different story if you go to one of the places located in a small town such as Smithville or Kearney. Half the inspection is just getting to the shop....if you make it there the thing is obviously road worthy. Past that as long as its not spitting fire out the exhaust or flinging rods all over creation....pretty much all you need is a working Horn, lights, and signals.

Makes sense, my college classmates from Missouri were from the sticks which would be why I they never talked about very in depth inspections.

I would be going to St Louis and I know they have pretty stiff emisions rules. I used to live in a small MO town that pretty much if it made it to the shop it passed. I have also had vehicles inspected over the phone so nobody was caught with a vehicle that would cause the shop to get a fine, but that was a long time ago and those guys have since moved on. I know that the MO inspection laws seem to change at an alarming rate ( one year my old car would not pass because of a cracked winshield I knew a guy who let that slide the next time however they didnt care about the winshield in the slightest but didt like a cracked parking light lens On another occasion the exuaust on my 1/2 ton came from the factory single I had installed headers and true duels with cats on both sides and it didnt fly because it varied from the factory layout) I just dont want to end up with a my daily driver sitting in driveway because they tossed another clause in the factory layout section.
It seems like the V8 swap there is on and off again every couple years.

Sorry i misread that!
Outside of just keeping on and heading a little further south...
Just use a stock setup out of a newer vehicle and you'll pass. This includes EGR, all sensors, and exhaust.
